John Calipari Interested In Pelicans' Job

May 19, 2015 1:27 PM

John Calipari has interest in becoming head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, according to a source close to the coach.

Calipari recently signed an extension with Kentucky.

Calipari would have the chance to reunite with Anthony Davis and Tyreke Evans if he returned to the NBA with the Pelicans.

there have been exploratory conversations between Calipari and the Pelicans, but it doesn't appear as though the franchise could meet his financial demands.

League sources said the Pelicans are willing to pay around $4 million to $5 million per season for Monty Williams' successor. Williams was fired last week after five seasons at the helm.

But Calipari makes about $8 million annually and recently agreed to a one-year contract extension through 2022, which he hasn't yet signed.

The financial aspects are a major issue for Calipari, while he also would seek input on the Pelicans' roster.

Calipari released the following statement via Twitter:

"Even though Anthony and Tyreke are in NOLA, I have no interest in the Pelicans or any other job. I have a great job and I'm happy at UK."

John Calipari Close To Extension With Kentucky Through 2022

May 12, 2015 8:43 PM

John Calipari and Kentucky are close to an extension at $8 million through 2022.

Calipari will also earn a $1.6 million longevity bonus on July 1.

Calipari's new contract is a seven-year, $54 million deal.

Calipari continues to be connected to NBA jobs, but he appears likely to remain at Kentucky at least through the 15-16 season.

Kentucky gave Calipari an extension and raise after the 2012 title to $5.2 million annually and then $7.5 million last June before the new $8 million deal.

John Calipari Won't Use Platoon System Again

May 5, 2015 3:51 PM

John Calipari said he won't use a platoon system again in the future.

When Alex Poythress tore his ACL in December, all 10 Kentucky rotation players were averaging between 15 and 25 minutes per game.

Calipari eventually used an eight-man rotation as the season progressed.

"If you ask me if I'm ever going to platoon again, my answer is NO," Calipari wrote on CoachCal.com. "Last season was an absolute outlier. It's just not the way I like to coach. I would rather play seven or eight guys because I believe that gives us the best chance to win. I think we wrote the book on platooning this year, but I hope we stick it on the shelf and never have to use it again."
